Apprentice Carpenter

Description

The Apprentice Carpenter performs carpentry and joinery tasks under the supervision of a team leader. The apprentice participates in the construction, assembly, and installation of sets or set components, both interior and exterior, in studio or on location, in accordance with plans, specifications, and received instructions.

Responsabilites

Depending on the level of apprenticeship, the Apprentice Carpenter‑Joiner may carry out the following tasks:

Framing and Structural Work

  • Build and erect wall, floor, and roof framing.
  • Construct and assemble temporary or permanent structures for sets and décors.
  • Apply layout, cutting, assembling, and shaping techniques for wood and, when required, metal components.

Building Envelope and Exterior Work

  • Install exterior cladding.
  • Install exterior doors and windows.

Joinery and Interior Finishing

  • Build interior partitions.
  • Perform interior finishing work, including:
    • interior doors,
    • moldings and trim,
    • shelves,
    • storage units,
    • wall coverings.
  • Build wooden staircases and install wood flooring.
  • Install built‑in furniture and cabinetry.

Teamwork and Safety

  • Work collaboratively with team members and other trades.
  • Comply strictly with occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Properly use tools, equipment, and materials provided.

Profile sought

  • Hold a valid competency card confirming apprentice status,
    or, if not, be able to demonstrate acquired skills through recognized work equivalencies.
  • 1, 2, or 3 years of relevant practical experience, depending on the apprenticeship level;
  • Successful completion of carpentry‑joinery courses at the secondary, college, or industry level;
  • Completion of a DEC in Architectural Woodworking, Scenic Carpentry training at a CEGEP, or another recognized equivalent program.
  • Strong interest in carpentry, joinery, and set construction
  • Ability to follow technical instructions and work as part of a team
  • Versatility, attention to detail, and good organizational skills
  • Good physical condition and commitment to quality workmanship
