Journeyman Carpenter

Description

The Journeyman Carpenter practices the trade with full autonomy, without direct supervision. The journeyman is responsible for the construction, assembly, and installation of sets or set components, both interior and exterior, in studio or on location, in accordance with plans, specifications, and instructions received from the Construction Project Manager or Foreman.
The journeyman plays a key role on the worksite and may, as required, guide and support apprentice carpenter.

Responsibilities

Set and Structural Construction

  • Construct and assemble sets or set components, either temporary or permanent.
  • Build and erect wall, floor, and roof framing.
  • Create structures intended for production environments (studio or location).

Building Envelope

  • Install exterior cladding.
  • Install exterior doors and windows.

Joinery and Interior Finishing

  • Build interior partitions and divisions.
  • Perform interior finishing work, including:
    • interior doors,
    • moldings and trim,
    • shelves,
    • storage units,
    • wall coverings.
  • Build wooden staircases.
  • Install wood flooring and hardwood parquet.
  • Install built‑in furniture and custom cabinetry.

Techniques and Work Methods

  • Independently apply layout, measuring, cutting, assembling, and shaping techniques for wood and metal components.
  • Accurately interpret technical drawings, plans, and specifications.
  • Ensure the quality, strength, and compliance of completed work.

Safety and Collaboration

  • Comply with and promote occupational health and safety standards.
  • Properly use tools, machinery, safety equipment, and scaffolding.
  • Work collaboratively with other trades and production team members.

Profile sought

  • The Journeyman Carpenter has completed more than 6,000 hours of work as an apprentice carpenter‑joiner prior to holding this position.
    The journeyman must:
  • Hold a valid competency card confirming journeyman status,
    or, if not, be able to demonstrate skills and knowledge through recognized work equivalencies.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts, including imperial and metric measurement systems
  • Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • High level of versatility and autonomy
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Proficiency in using a wide range of tools, equipment, and safety gear
  • Ability to work at heights and on scaffolding
  • Good physical condition and stamina for manual work
